The Practice Institute is offering a forum where you can bring any questions or concerns about private practice. No question is too small; no question is too large.

For example, ask us about marketing, factors to consider when joining a group practice, expanding your practice, how to look for office space and how to evaluate a lease arrangement, how to determine what to charge, whether or not to take insurance or participate in manged care plans, or any other practice related question. Hear your colleagues’ questions and build working relationships. You don’t have to feel isolated in your practice.

Dr. Falender is author of Getting the Most Out of Clinical Training and Supervision:  A Guide for Practicum Students and Interns, published by APA Books.

Dr. Falender is a Consultant and Lecturer providing trainings internationally on Clinical and Administrative Supervision and the Ethics of Supervision, as well as Treatment of Children and Adolescents and their Families. She is Clinical Professor, UCLA Department of Psychology, where she provides Supervision of Child and Family Intake Team. She is Adjunct Professor, Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology, where she Teaches courses on Treatment of Children, Adolescents, and Families; Professional Roles, and Practicum Supervision. Dr. Falender is also a Lecturer on cultural and diversity competency, child and adolescent diagnosis and treatment, and ethics.

Shauna Shapiro, Ph.D.: “The Art and Science of Mindfulness: Integrating Mindfulness into Psychology and the Helping Professions”

Meet the Authors: an Interview with Shauna Shapiro, Ph.D.

Dr. Shapiro is co-author (with Linda Carlson and Jon Kabat-Zin) of The Art and Science of Mindfulness: Integrating Mindfulness into Psychology and the Helping Professions, published by APA Books.

Dr. Shapiro is Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University and an internationally recognized expert in mindfulness.  Dr. Shapiro’s clinical work and research focus on the applications of mindfulness to help develop greater health and well-being from the individual to the global level. Dr. Shapiro graduating summa cum laude from Duke University and received her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Arizona, where she served as adjunct faculty for Andrew Weil’s Center for Integrative Medicine. With 20 years of meditation experience studying in Thailand and Nepal, as well as in the West, Dr. Shapiro brings an embodied sense of mindfulness to her academic work.  She has conducted extensive clinical research investigating the effects of mindfulness training across a wide range of populations and has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr. Shapiro is the recipient of the American Council of Learned Societies teaching award, acknowledging her outstanding contributions to graduate education in the area of mindfulness and psychotherapy. Dr. Shapiro has been invited to lecture for the King of Thailand, the Danish Government, Dean Ornish’s Preventive Medicine Institute, Nueva Innovative Learning, and the World Council for Psychotherapy, Beijing, China.

David Patterson, Ph.D.: “Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control”

Meet the Authors: an Interview with David Patterson, Ph.D.

Dr. Patterson is author of Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control published by APA Books.
 
David R. Patterson, PhD, ABPP, is a professor in the departments of rehabilitation medicine, surgery, and psychology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.  He has been working as a clinical psychologist at Harborview Medical Center since 1983, particularly in the burn unit and the psychology consultation and liaison service he created. He holds Diplomate degrees in the areas of psychological hypnosis and rehabilitation psychology. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1989, and he has published more than 150 articles and chapters in the areas of hypnosis, pain control, and adjustment to burn injuries and other types of trauma. As a long time soccer player, he enjoys coaching his sons in this sport and playing drums for the Shrinking Heads rock-and-roll band.

G. Andrew Benjamin, JD, Ph.D. “Keys in Completing Competent Parenting Evaluations”

Meet the Experts: an Interview with G. Andrew Benjamin, JD, Ph.D.

Dr. Benjamin will discuss the topic, “Keys in Completing Competent Parenting Evaluations.”
Dr. Benjamin is Director of the Parenting Evaluation Training Program at the University of
Washington in Seattle. He is author of numerous books realted to the intersection of law and psychology including Law and Mental Health Professionals: Washington (1995, 1998) and Family Evaluation in Custody Litigation: Reducing Risks of Ethical Infractions and Malpractice (2003) and The Duty to Protect: Ethical, Legal, and Professional Consideration for Mental Health professionals. 
While working with families engaged in high-conflict litigation and lawyers and law students with various mental health and drug abuse problems, he was named “Professional of the Year” by the Washington State Bar Association’s Family Law Section. He was elected president of the Washington State Psychological Association, and his colleagues in that association created an award named after him for “outstanding and tireless contributions.” Dr. Benjamin was honored by the Puyallup Indian Nation’s Health Authority as a “modern day warrior fighting the mental illnesses, drug–alcohol addictions” of the people served by the Nation’s program. The American Psychological Association (APA) gave him the Heiser Award in recognition of his record of public service and advocacy.
